Murder of Vermont border agent tied to string of killings across the country

A shooting in which a Vermont Border Patrol agent is dead can be connected to various other murders that extend from Pennsylvania to California.

Swanton sector Border Patrol agent David Maland, 44, was killed when the occupants of a car started to shoot at him when he stopped about 20 miles off the border between the US and Canada on January 20.

The suspected shooters have been identified as Teresa Youngblut, 21, by Washington and Felix Bauckholt – a German subject who was shot on site.

Youngblut was injured during the shootout and taken to the hospital. Maland was also taken to the hospital, where he was declared dead. The motives behind the incident remain unclear.

But public prosecutors believe that the shooting in Vermont was not an isolated crime – that Youngblut tied a double murder in Pennsylvania and a fatal stab in California.

In November 2024, Youngblut submitted an application to marry Maximilian Snyder, a 22-year-old data scientist, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Snyder was arrested on Friday and accused of killing a Vallejo, California house boss called Curtis Lind, 82, on January 17. He appeared in court on Tuesday.

A criminal complaint submitted in Solano County claims that Lind has been stabbed and killed 'with the aim of preventing his testimony in criminal procedure, “KTVU reported.

Lind had previously survived that he was attacked with a sword during a fight with his tenants in 2022.

The landlord shot one of his attackers, the 31-year-old Emma Borhanian. The other two suspected attackers, Suri Dao, 21, and Alexander Jeffrey Leatham, 27, were arrested.

The couple was charged, attempted murder and worsened chaos for attacking Lind with a sword. They were also accused of murder of Borhanian's death, according to KTVU.

Dao and Leatham will appear in court on February 19 – and Lind should testify against them.

In 2019, Borhanian and Leatham were arrested after participating in a bizarre protest in Westminster Woods, a camping retreat in Occidental, California, reported the San Francisco Chronicle.

Sonoma County's Sheriff's Office said that they reportedly blocked themselves in the wooded area to protest against artificial intelligence and a non -profit organization in Berkeley that organized an event there.

In 2021, Borhanian, Leatham and the two others who protested with them – Gwen Danielson and Jack Lasota – sued the Retreat and Sonoma County Sheriff's.

They claimed that they were tortured and belittled because they were transgender, but the case was rejected because the group stopped appearing before the court.

Youngblut can also be associated with the suspected murderers of Richard Zajko, 71, and his wife Rita, 69, who were found dead in their house in Delaware, Pennsylvania in January 2023.

Monday in court, prosecutors revealed that a person who may be involved in the Zajkos' murders would have bought the weapons Youngblut and Bauckholt used in the shooting in Vermont Border Patrol.

Moreover, Youngblut was consistent in contact with a different public “person of interest” that was held in Pennsylvania in connection with the double murder, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Youngblut is accused of one census of the use of a fatal weapon while an American border patrol agent attacks, and one census of the use and discharge of a firearm during and in connection with that attack, according to the office of the American lawyer.

Seattle's law enforcement revealed that Youngblut's parents told the police that they missed days before she had killed Maland, NBC5 reported.

Her parents said they had not heard from her for days and worry. Allegedly Youngblut moved to go live with a friend and changed her telephone number.

They revealed that their daughter had become alienated, took away from friends and lying about who she was and her place of residence.

But because Youngblut is an adult, the police found that there was no reason to formally report her missing.

When Youngblut and Bauckholt were put into a Prius by border days, Bauckholt reportedly had an expired visa.

The couple had been on the radars of the police after an employee of the hotel in Vermont had noticed that they were checking in with all the black clothing. Allegedly, Youngblut had an exposed gun.

They told the police that they were in Vermont looking for real estate to buy and checked out on January 19, according to public prosecutors.

Before the shooting they were last seen at a Walmart. Bauckholt bought aluminum foil and went to the car to wrap items in it.

After the attack, officers reportedly found two pistols, two phones wrapped in tin film, a ballistic helmet, night-view goggles, a tactical belt, two full-face breathing machines, bullets, hand-based radios, a dozen electronic devices and travel documents, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

They would also have seen the diary of Youngblut that 'Cypher text' and statements contained that refer to drug use -including 'standing up on acid' and 'this LSD trip seems pretty soft'.
