Tesco has said that it will reduce 400 jobs as part of plans to 'simplify' the company in the midst of a market that is 'competitive than ever'.

The supermarket giant said that managers in his head office and Tesco mobile phone shops, as well as employees of the bakeries in the store, will be hit.

Matthew Barnes, the British boss of Tesco, said: 'These are difficult decisions that influence our colleagues, but we believe they are needed to enable us to invest in what is the most important thing for our customers.

'Our priority is to support affected colleagues and we will do everything we can to help them find alternative roles within our company. Today we have almost 1,000 vacancies available. '

The supermarket started talking with colleagues about proposed changes in shops and head offices because it is looking for more efficient ways of working.

Tesco also announced today that it would launch a consultation in the coming days in Kent about the closure of its Snodland Distribution Center, in Kent.

It comes after it has previously announced plans to invest in a new distribution center in Aylesford.

The supermarket said that the Aylesford site, just three miles from the Snodland DC, was larger with new and improved facilities for colleagues – and that all colleagues in Snodland would get a role on the new site.

Tesco's announcement of job reductions comes despite the supermarket that registers its 'largest' Christmas sales ever, with the turnover in UK stores with 4% in the six weeks prior to January 4.

Thousands of jobs at Morrisons and Sainsbury's will also be added after the budget of Rachel Reeves has affected companies with a large increase in costs.

Sainsbury's is to dismiss 3000 employees because of what it said was a 'particularly challenging cost environment', despite the company that Bumper saw Christmas sales.

Last November, the company warned that changes in the budget would mean an extra £ 140 million in costs, with CEO Simon Roberts as a result warned of potential 'tough choices'.

Sainsbury's was already insisting to save £ 1 billion in the coming years, but it is clear that the reduction in the functions of senior management is partially linked to an increase in the National Insurance Contributions (NICs) ordered by the Chancellor.

At the same time, sick Morrisons is to reduce 200 personnel roles in a large business admission of customer service, employee involvement and payroll administration.

We were further today, because new figures showed a record -breaking increase in the number of companies with a serious risk of collapse.

Consumer -oriented sectors such as hotels, leisure and retailers are mainly under pressure, said Begbies Traynor consultancy.
