A 20-year-old student was one of the 67 passengers on Doomed American Airlines Flight 5342 after returning home to attend her grandfather's funeral.

Grace Maxwell, a 20-year-old Biomedical Engineering student at Cedarville University in Ohio, was back to school on the doomed flight.

Allegedly she had been in Kansas to attend her grandfather's funeral, reports the Wichita Eagle.

Her father told the publication that she 'was on the plane', but that he had not yet heard of authorities about further details.

Cedarville University told WLWT that Maxwell's death will be formally tackled with the student body during an All-campus Chapel program on Friday.

“As you can imagine, the Maxwell family and the community of Cedarville University have been very difficult for the last 24 hours,” the school said.

“As a university, we no longer want to change this tragic event into slightly more than a way to honor grace, her family and Jesus.”

Maxwell graduated in 2026.

“Grace was a resident of Maddox Hall and known as a thoughtful, calm student leader,” said her school.

“During her university years, she helped as a faculty for mechanical engineering as a class.”

The secondary adviser of Maxwell, Dr. Tim Norman, described her as “a quiet person with a great interest in helping others through Engineering.”

She was “planned to serve this semester in a project team that would start creating a hand-stabilizing device for a differently engaged Dayton boy so that he could feed himself instead of trusting others.”

The school said: 'Although we do not understand why this happened, we are convinced that grace is with Jesus Christ.

'Those among us who believe in Christ will see her again. We mourn, but not like that without hope. '

Counseling Services are available for all students and employees.

Divers return on Friday to keep looking for the remaining victims.

There were 60 passengers on board the plane and four crew members, as well as three soldiers on board the Black Hawk Army -Helicopter with which it collided.

Authorities say there are no survivors.

David Hoagland, chairman of the DC Fire Fighters Association, revealed the harrowing scenes that first respondents were confronted on Thursday evening.

“It's graphic. They met people on the plane who were still tied in their seats, and they could not remove them immediately, “said Hoagland.

“Today, many of the efforts are aimed at removing people from the plane they could not remove last night, and just continue scanning the entire area to see who they can find.”
