The police arrested a man after an 11-year-old girl was put dead in the Dutch city of Nieugein in broad daylight.
The incident happened on Saturday afternoon around 3 p.m. local time (14:00 GMT). Local reports suggest that the victim was on the street in Utrecht City, about 30 miles from the capital, Amsterdam, when she was stabbed.
Emergency services were called on the spot, but could not save her life, the police said.
A 29-year-old man was arrested and ANP News Agency reported that the police confirmed that the suspect was originally from Syria.
The agency said the police are investigating reports that the suspect had worn 'confused' in the week before the attack.
They did not give a motivation for the attack.
A statement from the Utrecht regional police was: “In the immediate vicinity, the police arrested a 29-year-old suspect based on information from bystanders and others.”
