Ed Miliband today refused to give full support to the expansion of Heathrow when he finally broke cover.
The Net Zero Secretary is accused of hiding after Rachel Reeves endorsed the long project dramatically last week.
But on his regular energy questions in the commons this afternoon, Mr. Miliband – a vocal opponent of the plan for years – was challenged by green MP Carla Denyer about the announcement.
Mr. Miliband replied: “Every aviation extension … must take place within carbon budgets and within environmental boundaries.”
Mrs Reeves used a big speech last Wednesday to set the expansion of Heathrow in the center of her new economic growth plan.
The Chancellor claimed that an expansion of the West -London site was' desperately needed 'because' growth has been limited 'for decades'. The government has asked the airport to submit an application by June, although it is probably years before a runway would be operational.
Mr. Miliband did not attend Mrs Reeves's speech in Oxfordshire, despite many other ministers who were present, and was not seen on the prime minister's questions on the same day later.

Milieu Secretary Steve, on the other hand, rode – another critic from the past of Heathrow extension – offered public support within a few hours for the plans of Mrs. Reeves.
There have been claims that Mr. Miliband led the previous day to build a third runway in Heathrow in Cabinet.
Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan van London has emerged as the oldest open opponent of the expansion of Heathrow.
The Labor politician promised to 'block a third runway with each tool in the toolkit'.
Sir Sadiq said he is stopping the expansion of Heathrow because of its impact on noise, air pollution and achieving the British climate change goals.
He added the last plans for a third runway in Heathrow included building a tunnel under the M25 fast road and a village of Bulldoz.
Mr. Miliband has made it clear in private that he will not resign about the decision of the Chancellor.
He has told allies that it is important that a vocal supporter of climate issues remains in the cabinet.
Downing Street has refused to confirm whether there must be a Common's voice to give the green light.
