A 40-year-old grandmother attacked three strangers in a drunk anger during an eight-hour pub until the early hours of the morning with her elderly mother.

Gemma McManus left a man with abdominal pain and his partner missed a lump of her when she attacked the victims outside the old Queens head in Chester on January 12.

The chicken factory worker from Shotton, Chester, wrongly claimed that she thought her mother was being attacked and intervened. Later the grandmother admitted that she had to 'grow up'.

The incident happened after McManus was stabbed with her mother and stepmother in the tavern, after a visit to others the previous evening.

McManus hit victim Peter Catherall 'several times' before she pulled out part of the hair of Miss Lyn Derbyshire while she tried to grab her partner, the court was told.

Mr Catherall has a current hernia in his stomach and complained about abdominal pains – but did not go to the hospital.

The grandmother also went further to Miss Ellie Johnson who hit her on her back during a fight, but no injuries were caused, the court heard.

Scott Woodad, persecution, said to the court: 'Miss Derbantshire had pulled a hair off her head.

At Chester Magistrates Court, McManus argued guilty of Common Assault and was instructed to complete 100 Bours unpaid work and pay £ 250 compensation.

“The suspect was then arrested by the officers on the spot. During the interview, she blamed and apologized for her actions. '

In a statement, Mr Catherall said that he saw McManus approaching and hit the face before pulling the hair from Miss Derbantshire.

“The only thing I remember was on the floor. I can't remember what happened. I remember having a lot of pain, “he said.

In mitigation, the lawyer of McManus, Tony Birchall said: 'The suspect described himself as a happy drunk, but when she came out of the pub, there was a fight outside. She believed that her mother was being attacked and that she became involved.

'Most of her arms seem to wave around and she tried the three individuals she had never met before. At that time she believed that they had attacked her mother. I think the complainants had also drunk – and it 2 hours.

'Her memory will be blurry as a result of drinking, but she apologizes by me for what happened. '

A probation officer who spoke with McManus said: 'She does not try to justify her actions in any way.

“The background is that she had been her mother and mother of her mother the evening before 6.30 pm to visit public houses in Chester.”

The probation officer said that the grandmother was not 'heavily intoxicated' and told that McManus told her that she had drunk tonic water in most pubs because of acid reflux.

“She had a glass of wine and a vodka and cola and one pint for the incident,” the officer continued.

The probation worker said that McManus acted out of 'concern' for her mother and stepfather a fight with a group of people.

“She fully admits that her behavior was completely inappropriate. She tries not to justify it. It was not intentional or planned in advance. It was more reckless, “she said.

“She describes herself as very embarrassed for her actions and has demonstrated a very high level of victim empathy.”

McManus acknowledged that it would have been a frightening experience for anyone looking at the incident, with people who get food and wait for taxis in the neighborhood, according to the probation officer.

“She described in a cell in the morning and knowing that she is a grandmother and was in a cell, her words were that she had to grow up,” she added.

In the conviction of deputy district judge, Jones ordered McManus £ 100 to pay for compensation to Mr Catherall and £ 100 to Miss Derbantshire and £ 50 to Miss Johnson. She was also made up to £ 199 in costs and victim surcharge.

The judge told her: 'This was a very unpleasant incident, but I accept your regret and it will not be custody. '

McManus himself said to the court: “I'm ashamed.”
