Musk's takeover of USAID has shocked government employees and contractors and angry Democrats.
A number of democratic legislators appeared outside the office on Monday to show support after employees were rejected on Monday morning of the DC head office.
State Secretary Marco Rubio has currently taken over the acting manager of USAID.
The tariff threats also sent the markets that tumbled earlier on Monday, but Leavitt denied that this had some impact on Trump that had a fast deal with Mexico.
A similar deal with Canada was also worked out by Monday evening.
“It had no decision. What influenced the delay on the rates was the president of Mexico who is committed to placing 10,000 permanent soldiers on the border between the US and Mexican, “Leavitt said.
