Royal Mail won’t deliver our post… because of potholes! Hamlet locals’ fury over delivery firm’s refusal to drive down ‘dangerous’ roads

A disabled woman in her 60s said that she is 'full of despair' after the Royal Mail refused to deliver mail to her remote hamlet because the windy way of the route is 'too dangerous'.

Val Bennallick, 62, who has multiple sclerosis, was left without deliveries for a month before it was informed that Postmen were not going to return to the bumpy track that leads to Esworthy, a hamlet in East Devon.

Instead, the retired teacher was told that she and the seven other residents of the Hamlet would have to complete a 14-Mile tour to collect their packages from Okhampton, a neighboring city.

Mrs Bennallick said to The Times: 'I don't want to be cut off from the post, but I was not told for more than a month. Do you think about yourself, how on the hell can that happen? It's just ridiculous. '

Eventually the courier told Mrs. Bennallick that the route was even too unsafe to inform her about the change.

She continued: 'For me it is an essential service. I do many things online, but some things have to be sent to me, such as labels for my regular blood tests. '

Residents of Essenworth are now confronted with a postbox on a postbox elsewhere or travel a total of 14 miles to collect their mail.

Although she admitted that the road was 'not good', said Mrs. Bennallick, who controls a Ford Fiesta, that the other residents, traders and employees are nevertheless 'every day' on their way.

The pronounced retired person complained to Royal Mail in a number of e -mails. In one she called the behavior of the courier 'incredible, unprofessional, indifferent and downright disgusting'.

'All upset and stress that this caused would be bad enough for every young, fit person, but I have a number of health problems.

“The prospect of having to travel 14 miles to try to get answers and to do the same trip for the rest of my life to get my post just fulfills me with fear and despair.”

An employee of Royal Mail apologized to Mrs. Bennallick, who is now awaiting a response from the local delivery person of the delivery.

A Royal Mail spokesperson told MailOnline: 'Deliveries were suspended for worries of the local team about the poor quality of the private road.

'We are sorry that this was not communicated to Mrs. Bennallick.

“We judge these deliveries as a matter of urgency and will collaborate with Mrs. Bennallick to offer a solution.”
