Father, 38, appears in court charged with murdering his one-month-old son

A father appeared in court after he has been accused of the murder of his one-old baby son.

Tony Bartlett from St. Andrews Drive, Axminster, is accused of murdering his son Atticus Bartlett, who died on July 23, 2022.

The 38-year-old appeared yesterday to the court of Yeovil Magistrates, where he was returned and will appear today for Bristol Crown Court.

Senior research officer Detective Superintendent Lorett Spierenburg said that the case was 'deeply sad' like a baby – only a few weeks old – 'tragically lost their lives'.

“This is a very sad thing in which a young baby, who was only a few weeks old, lost their lives in tragic,” said Det Supt Spierenburg.

'An extensive police investigation was carried out, led by our large crime investigation team, in the past two and a half years, which has led Bartlett to be charged this week and appears before the court.

'This remains a deeply disturbing time for Atticus' family.

'Our thoughts are with them and we will continue to provide them with specialized support as the progress of legal proceedings progresses.

“We would ask on their behalf that their privacy is being respected.”

The superintendent also said that the police of Avon and Somerset are helping the chard community.

They added: 'We understand that this development will probably cause a lot of shock and upset in Chard and the local neighborhood team will be available to help everyone who is worried.

'The full details of what happened will be presented before the court during the following hearings and that is why we would please ask that people are patient and currently not speculate about the circumstances.

“Such speculation will probably not only cause further fear of Atticus family, but can also harm future legal proceedings and the defendant cannot prevent the right to a fair trial.”
