Navin Ramgoolam answered questions in the Mauritian national meeting and said that Sir Keir had discussed the prospect of a deal with him in a telephone conversation on Friday.
One senior government source told the BBC: “How can we spend billions of pounds to give something away?”
A backbencher from Labor said to MailOnline: 'It feels like nobody has thought what this will look like to the average person.

A re -negotiated Chagos -deal, which Mr. Ramgoolam said that the Mauritian sovereignty confirmed over the islands and required mutual agreement for any extension of the lease of the lease on Diego Garcia, is currently being assessed by the Trump administration.
Ramgoolam said to the national meeting: “President Trump is not a wolf. Let him see if the agreement is good or not.
“Now the British have decided late in the day that, yes, it is better to have the new administration look, that's what the situation is.”
When asked about the reported costs of the deal, Mr. Reed told Sky News: 'It was clear that when this government was already going on in negotiations about the future of that basis and its future was not safe.
'Our priority is of course safety, so those negotiations continue. There were some figures that were [..] I have read them, I am sure your viewers did that yesterday. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that those figures were wrong, but we have to wait and discover exactly where these negotiations end up before we know for sure. '

The possible impact of payments to Mauritius on the so -called economic black gap of the government added, added: 'We must secure the future of that military base. It is in a very important strategic location worldwide.
'It is of course not only the UK that is interested here, just like the US, and the government ensures that we hear the opinion of the US before we make a final decision.
“But we have to wait and see what the final result of those negotiations is, but I can confirm that the rather extraordinary figures that we heard yesterday are not correct.”
