Keir Starmer is hammered over ‘£18bn surrender’ on Chagos Islands at PMQs as he insists ‘national security’ means the handover to Mauritius must happen – despite Cabinet backlash

Keir Starmer was hammered today on the Chagos Islands on the Chagos Islands during poor PMQS collisions.

The prime minister was accused of Tory leader Kemi Badenoch of handing Mauritius the British territory 'so that lawyers in North Londs can brag on their dinner'.

But Sir Keir insisted that there was a need for 'legal certainty' about the status of the military base on Diego Garcia – and said that the deal was needed for 'national security'.

The stock markets came in the midst of signs that the PM is confronted with a cupboard in revolt about the 'crazy' proposals.

There are claims that the agreement to hand over the sovereignty will pay the Mauritius government to £ 18 billion.

That would be to organize a lease agreement of 99 years to organize the strategically crucial military basis, although much of the amount at the front would be.

Wage alarm in the prospect of the pact, however, has been set up, with fears the 'terrible' regulation will be a gift for reform and 'impossible to understand'.

Fingers are pointed to Sir Keir himself and his good friend Lord Hermer, the attorney general, who is reportedly involved in conversations.

The couple are both former human rights lawyers. There have long been existing questions about the status of the Chagos Islands under international law – although many critics reject the disputes about sovereignty.

Touring Broadcast Studios This morning said environmental secretary Steve Reed that financial figures that are reported with regard to the deal of the Chagos Islands were 'not correct'.

Navin Ramgoolam answered questions in the Mauritian national meeting and said that Sir Keir had discussed the prospect of a deal with him in a telephone conversation on Friday.

One senior government source told the BBC: “How can we spend billions of pounds to give something away?”

A backbencher from Labor said to MailOnline: 'It feels like nobody has thought what this will look like to the average person.

'The reform will go around and say that there was no money for the winter fuel supply, but there are billions for this deal. It makes fighting so much more difficult. '

Navin Ramgoolam answered questions in the Mauritian national meeting and said that Sir Keir had discussed the prospect of a deal with him in a telephone conversation on Friday.

And he said that Sir Keir wanted to 'move forward' with a deal that would give Mauritius a veto about the extension of a proposed 99-year-old lease on the strategically important Diego Garcia air base used by the United States.

Critics including senior figures in the Trump government and on the opposition benches in the commons have warned that the transfer runs the risk of giving a powerful boost to China in the Indian Ocean.

Last year, the VK had reached an agreement on returning sovereignty about the Chagos Islands to Mauritius with the previous Mauritian government, but Mr. Ramgoolam insisted that he was negotiating the deal when he came to power in November.

A re -negotiated Chagos -deal, which Mr. Ramgoolam said that the Mauritian sovereignty confirmed over the islands and required mutual agreement for any extension of the lease of the lease on Diego Garcia, is currently being assessed by the Trump administration.

Ramgoolam said to the national meeting: “President Trump is not a wolf. Let him see if the agreement is good or not.

“Now the British have decided late in the day that, yes, it is better to have the new administration look, that's what the situation is.”

When asked about the reported costs of the deal, Mr. Reed told Sky News: 'It was clear that when this government was already going on in negotiations about the future of that basis and its future was not safe.

'Our priority is of course safety, so those negotiations continue. There were some figures that were [..] I have read them, I am sure your viewers did that yesterday. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that those figures were wrong, but we have to wait and discover exactly where these negotiations end up before we know for sure. '

The possible impact of payments to Mauritius on the so -called economic black gap of the government added, added: 'We must secure the future of that military base. It is in a very important strategic location worldwide.

'It is of course not only the UK that is interested here, just like the US, and the government ensures that we hear the opinion of the US before we make a final decision.

“But we have to wait and see what the final result of those negotiations is, but I can confirm that the rather extraordinary figures that we heard yesterday are not correct.”
