A 'healthy' first mother and her newborn baby only died apart for a few hours, leaving her partner and family deeply sad.

Mellodie-Ocean Jarman, 19, from Atherton in Greater Manchester, complained about feeling faint and dizzy on the way to a routine pregnancy scan on Friday 31 January.

During her scan, a doctor told Mellodie that she was 'low on iron' after she complained about her symptoms and saying relatives that she was sent home with medication and antibiotics.

But the next day Mellodie started to complain that she had trouble breathing and struggling to see.

She was rushed to the Royal Bolton Hospital and lost consciousness when Paramedici desperately tried to breathe new life into her resuscitation.

After they arrived in the hospital, doctors carried out an emergency C section and gave birth to Mellodie early, in the early hours of Sunday 2 February.

Tragically enough, Mellodie died about an hour after the operation and the family was told that Baby Athena-Pearl would not make it.

She leaves her partner, Daniel Darbyshire, 18, and grieving mother Justine Ryan, 52.

Heartbroken Uncle Steven Darby, 32, said: 'We got a phone call around four o'clock to say that the baby is going backwards, so we have to find our way back.

“We went back to the suite and we went on with the priest and have a baptism.

“Then it was planned for Athena to be placed on a portable machine so that she can walk down and transfer to the mortuary, where she was placed in Mellodie's arms and her lifestination was eliminated.”

Hartbroken partner Daniel then pushed Athena-Pearl back to the neonatal department to spend a little more time with her. She eventually died at 6.30 p.m.

Steven added: 'He does not know what to do with himself, what is understandable in these situations – he has lost everything.

'Everything he has planned, everything he wanted to do seems worse at the moment. We support him as well as possible. '

Now the family is confronted with paying steep funeral costs.

Mellodie's mother Justine said: “Mellodie was a brutal, preceding person who always said what it's like.

'She knew what she wanted in life and always found the chatter and funny side in things. She was a real character. '

Steven added: 'At the moment we know nothing until an investigation determines the full size of what happened.

'She was a healthy 19-year-old without health complications, so we just can't understand what happened.

'Now we have to go to the funeral directors and resolve the funeral costs, which in itself is a very discouraging experience, so I wanted to set up a fundraising, so that the family does not have to worry about one of these costs.

'It was deep traumatic [in hospital] But the doctors and the neo-natal team were absolutely fantastic, and they all tried to save the baby.

“You could see that it was also traumatic for them, but they did everything they could to support us.”

Writing on Gofundme, which so far has collected slightly less than £ 6,000, Steven wrote: 'Please, I ask you to help us rest our beloved girl and her dear baby daughter.

'On the heartbreaking Sunday, February 2, 2025, Mellodie was rushed to the hospital, where a brave team fought relentlessly to save our beautiful girl.

'At that critical moment, while life hung in the balance, her and her partner Daniel's radiant star, Little Athena-Pearl, entered this world.

'But with a shattering sadness that we made us falter at the tender age of 19, Mellodie slid away.

'Our family is flooded in destruction. We held hope with every us from our beings, praying for a miracle – that both Mellodie and Daniel's daughter would thrive.

'After what felt like an eternity of fear, we received the complicated gift to put Mellodie's daughter in her arms while the machines are silent. Together they fell into eternal sleep, bound by an unbreakable love bond that transcends everything.

“The pain we endure is incomprehensible. The Van Daniel and Mellodie family are unprepared and navigated by this unimaginable loss while trying to understand what awaits us.

'So I say this with love and grace, we want to send Mellodie and Baby Athena on their last trip without the weight of financial burdens – without the shadow of affordability that looms over us.

Every support you could offer means the world for us, to express more than words. '
