He was paid £ 30,000 to represent Gerry Adams against the victims of IRA bombs in a case for the Supreme Court that would go to court next year.

This has asked questions about his role in the government's plans to withdraw the Legacy Act, which could lead to compensation funded by the taxpayer for Irish Republican figures, including the former Sinn Fein leader.

He was also blamed by some cabinet colleagues for the handling of the controversial chagos -deal, including Great Britain, would give up sovereignty to Mauritius. Downing Street has confirmed that the prime minister retains the absolute confidence in Lord Hermmer.

Last month, Lord Hermer was accused by his predecessors of breaking through the treaty by refusing to explain his financial interests.

He has admitted that he must recover 'from certain things' when advising the government because of possible conflicts of interest.
