An EasyJet flight from Manchester to Egypt is forced to carry out an emergency landing after a pilot has collapsed on board.

The plane had traveled from Hurghada in Egypt to the North Engine city on Saturday evening, but had to be redirected to Athens when one of the pilots had a medical emergency.

As soon as the pilot collapsed, the members of the cabin crew saw to the front of the plane, while the passengers on board realized that something was wrong for two hours.

A passenger told the mirror that crew members then “shouted if someone was medically trained”, which led to a few “getting up and helping cabin crew.”

They added: 'The next call was from the cabin crew to advise that this was the captain/pilot who was looking for medical help and had fallen unwell and we would again be updated with what would happen.

“At this point the passengers began to become quite worried and anxious, including knowing myself that it was a pilot and not the passenger.”

The remaining pilot was then given the task of successfully landing the plane at the Greek airport. After doing this, paramedics entered the plane to offer treatment.

The nameless passenger said that those on board were 'rather worried and anxious' after they found out that it was the pilot who had collapsed and described the landing as 'very rough and scary'.

They said, 'We started to panic and think it was the end. Another passenger began to get a panic attack and got an oxygen mask to help. '

After they were safely touched, the crew and passengers were greeted by a large number of fire engines, police cars and ambulances.

A spokesperson for EasyJet said: 'EasyJet can confirm that flight Ezy2252 from Hurghada to Manchester was diverted to Athens last night because of the captain who needed medical help.

'The first officer carried out a routine landing in accordance with standard operational procedures and the aircraft was hired by paramedics on arrival in Athens.

'As a result, the upward flight was delayed at night and passengers will continue their journey to Manchester today. We have all done to minimize the impact of the disruption and arranged hotel rooms and meals where available.

“We want to apologize to passengers for the inconvenience and thank them for their patience and understanding.”
