A recorded telephone conversation with the prison has led to the grim discovery of the fetus of a baby in a freezer in the inner west of Sydney.

Corrective service personnel intercepted the call between a prisoner and a woman on the outside who spoke about the remains stored in a bag in a freezer in a house in Marrickville.

Prison officers warned the NSW police, who invaded the house last Thursday.

“After performing an order at home, detectives found a bag in the freezer with what is considered a fetus,” a police spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia.

“A crime scene was founded and the fetus was brought to Glebe Morue for further research.”

The Frazer Street house where the remains were found is not understood as that of the baby's mother.

“After investigation, the police were advised that the fetus is less than 20 weeks of pregnancy,” the spokesperson added.

Strike Force Canfield was launched to investigate the incident.

Because the fetus was still in the first trimester, questions are now aimed at supporting the baby's mother.

“(There is) no further police investigation (s) the correct references that are made,” said the spokesperson.

The research is supposed to look at a possible connection between the fetus found in Marrickville and the discovery of an umbilical cord and placenta last May.

That find, by a dog lit at the Cooks River in Earlwood, was later determined by forensic tests to be a boy.

The location where the placenta was found is just 3 km from where the fetus was found in Marrickville.

Neither the mother or baby from the Earlwood case was once identified, despite the police who are launching several public calls for information.
