Danish campaigners propose to buy California from the United States and to turn it into a territory of Denmark in response to Donald Trump's offer to acquire Greenland.
The 'Denmarkification' campaign says it is trying to buy $ 1 trillion to buy the American state, after which it is planning to bring it into Danish values and to get the most out of his sunny weather and resources.
President Trump has repeatedly shown interest in making Greenland – an autonomous territory of Denmark – part of the US, referring to its strategic importance and mineral wealth. He has not excluded the use of military or economic power to convince the EU member to transfer it.
Without mentioning Trump's threats, the Denmarkification website mentions its ambitions in similar terms such as those used by the Republican – for example, to “make California great again”.
The campaign “To help Denmark to buy California – because why not?” was started by Xavier Dutoit and the online petition delivered around 200,000 signatures within a few hours.
Promises include renaming the state as new Denmark and changing his Disney resort in Hans Christian Andersenland -complete with a Viking helmet -bearing Mickey Mouse.
