Waste workers hit out at ‘Hitchcock’ like scenes at council site as dive-bombing seagulls swarm the skies

It is a scene reminiscent of the classic horror thriller of Alfred Hitchcock, the birds while hundreds of seagulls recognize the surrounding buildings and swarm the air above.

However, this is not a cult film clip, but a part of daily life for employees on a Scottish waste site.

The staff of the council who work at the Polmadie Refuse and Recycling Center in Glasgow spits feathers about the proliferation of diving gulls on the site.

And in a mystery that Hitchcock itself is worthy, they claim that the number of seagulls in the facility has risen for no clear reason in recent weeks.

That is their despair to draw attention to their plight that they have called in their trade union to call action and to increase awareness of the challenging circumstances they have to endure.

To this end, the Union-GMB has imposed a one from its members with the attracting of a life-size sailor and posing for photos under the guise of 'Steven Seagull' for the collected press.

GMB's Cleaning Covenant Chris Mitchell said that the problem should be tackled as a matter of urgency.

He said: “Steven has certainly cut out his work to get on top of this problem.

'We don't really know for sure what this caused, but our members are worried because the problem seems to get worse. It is like a scene of the birds of Alfred Hitchcock on some days. '

A source, which is located in the facility in the East End of Glasgow, explained: 'We have always had birds overhead, but for some reason the problem with the seagulls has exploded in recent weeks.

'There are literally hundreds here at a certain moment, diving down to grab food and leave everywhere behind.

“It was funny to see the trade union send someone in costume to emphasize the problem, but there is a serious message that should be heard if the amount of droppings around the place is a health risk.”

The Council has previously paid for a HAVIK to patrol problem areas during the Nesting season of the Seagull in early May and Mr. Mitchell thinks it might be time to bring it back.

He added: 'These birds of prey were trained to be afraid and not to kill, other birds that can be a scourge for people who live and work in the neighborhood.

'In the past they were used effectively by the council and I would encourage them to regard this as a possible solution.

'We take a bit of a light -hearted approach to increase consciousness, but it is a problem that we need the council to try to be aware of urgency.

'The place is a mess with the number of droppings and it must be solved before it gets worse.

'Our members should not work in such circumstances. The place must be cleaned up and the problem with the addressed seagulls. '

A Viridor spokesperson, who manages the depot, said it works to solve the problem.

They added: “We are aware of seagull activities around the Polmadie site and are already working together with our contractor for pest control to identify further improvements to our existing control measures.”

A council spokesperson said: 'seagulls are common in waste depots and we have health and safety measures to protect staff.

'Extra measures are being taken to manage the seagull population around the depot and staff are reminded of the steps they need to protect their well -being.

“Hawks can be used for waste depots in the city, but they don't have a lasting impact on a seagull population.”
