Donald Trump has pressed a rate of 25 percent on steel and aluminum by the United States from all countries – but hinted that Australia could get an exemption.
“Today I simplify our rates about steel and aluminum,” said the American president.
“It is 25 percent without exceptions or exemptions.”
When asked for possible retribution from other countries, Trump said: “I don't mind.”
Despite his comments, Trump hinted that Australia could get an exemption after he had spoken with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese earlier today.
“I told him that that is something that we will give a big consideration,” said Trump.
Trump also called Mr. Albanese a 'very nice man' and said that Australia's commercial surplus brought the country into a good position with the United States.
“We have a surplus with Australia. One of the few. And the reason is that they buy many aircraft. They are quite far away and they need many planes. We actually have a surplus, “said Trump.

Trump called Mr. Albanese a 'very nice man' after the phone call from the couple on Tuesday
Earlier today, Mr Albanese said that he was convinced that a deal could be closed with Trump to free up the special status for Australia from the trading rates.
“I presented Australia's matter for an exemption, and we have agreed to formulate to say publicly – namely that the US president agreed that an exemption was considered in the interest of both of our countries,” said the Lord Albanian.
'We remain fairly clear, constructive.
'If you look at what we have already achieved, it was a huge start to the relationship. Penny Wong [was] invited for the inauguration [and] Richard Marles sat down with the Minister of Defense, Pete Hegseeth, just at the weekend. '
Albanian emphasized that his call for Trump's was first with world leaders since his inauguration.
'We have a USD $ 2 trillion economy here. [Super] Funds look at international investments and investments here in Australia, “said Mr. Albanese, show that they can be a source for capital investments in the US.
Trump imposed similar rates on steel and aluminum during his first term in 2018, but Australia was able to obtain an exemption from the measure shortly after it was determined.
Speaking after signing an executive order that set the rates in the Oval Office, Trump said that the measure would strengthen production in the US.
'It will reduce our aluminum activities and let it go higher. It can be higher, “he said.
