Val Mainwood, 78, a retired piano teacher, is one of the standing guard next to the tree.

She said: 'Nobody was warned about it at all – this is not just about trees. This is about people's lives, it is about people's houses, it is about the finances of people.
“It is a huge situation and it must be investigated well, and I am not confident that it was well investigated.”
The locals say that the tree only started a problem after the parking lot had been struck several years ago – and said it had led the roots of the oak to spread further in search of water.
