Wes Streeting says campaign to prove baby killer Lucy Letby’s innocence is ‘not the right thing to do’

The health secretary has described the campaign to prove Lucy Letby's innocence as 'not the right thing to do'.

Wes Streeting has said that he will believe the nurse's conviction for killing and trying to kill babies is fair, unless a court decides otherwise.

Letby, 35, from Hereford, must be 15 orders of the whole life after she was convicted during two processes to the Manchester Crown Court for killing seven babies and trying to kill seven others, with two attempts on one of her victims, between June 2015 and June 2016.

Last year she lost two bids to challenge her convictions before the Court of Appeal – in May for seven murders and seven attempted murders, and in October for the attempted murder of a baby girl for which she was convicted by another jury in one New process.

A panel of international medical experts concluded that poor medical care and natural causes led to the death of babies that it was said to have been harmed by the neonatal nurse.

Mark McDonald, the lawyer of the lawyer, has described the Letby's legal team, the findings of the panel as a 'game check'.

Mr Streeting was asked at LBC about his earlier comments that speculation about the innocence of the former nurse was 'coarse and insensitive'.

'Well, it is still the case that Lucy Letby is convicted of the crimes she was accused of. I know that a campaign is being conducted, also because of her legal team … and including some of my parliamentary colleagues, “he said.

The panel of 14 neonatologists and pediatric specialists led by retired Canadian Medic Dr Shoo Lee presented what they called an 'impartial evidence-based report' during a press conference of two hours earlier this month.

MP Sir David Davis was at the event and described Letby's convictions as 'one of the most important injustices of modern times'.

But Mr Streeting insisted on campaigners and everyone involved in 'The Court of Public Opinion' to look at the established legal process if they think there has been an unlawful conviction.

“I would ask people to consider those grieving parents who have lost their babies.

'I still think that this way by conducting a campaign in the aftermath of these beliefs, it is not the right thing to do.

“I still think there is a judicial process to follow.”

Mr. Streeting said it is “not a political campaign, it's a legal process.”

He added: “Until it is told otherwise by the courts of this country, I will stay with the view that there has been a fair conviction here until the courts determine otherwise.”

Dr. Lee said that the panel had discovered a number of medical problems at the countess of the Chester Hospital, where Letfy worked and that the hospital would be closed if it was in his home country of Canada.

“In our opinion, the medical opinion supports that medical evidence does not support the murder in any of these babies – only natural causes and poor medical care,” he said during the press conference.

The Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC), which investigates potential miscarriages of justice, has started with the assessment of Letby's case, which is said to be a 'considerable volume of complicated evidence'.

The independent authority said it was currently not possible to determine how long it will take to revise the application for the Letby's legal team.
