A former PhD student who became the first to be convicted of conspirating to commit female genital mutilation (FGM) has increased his 'unnecessary mild' punishment.

Emad Kady, a former PhD student and Professor at the University of Nottingham, this week his prison sentence of four and a half years increased to seven years after his first term was referred to the Court of Appeal under the unnecessary military regulation.

A 'historical' case in England and Wales, the 48-year-old had made 'barbaric' arrangements for an unconscious young girl to travel from the United Kingdom to Iraq before he was reported by a witness.

The police seized his phone, where they found evidence that Kady was 'clear' to subject the young girl to FGM, the Crown Prosecution Service previously argued and said that the former professor called his actions 'normal'.

Kady denied any misconduct, and it was heard during a trial at the Crown Court of Nottingham, he said his victim will not die, many people practice it. '

This week the office of the Attorney General confirmed that the period of four and a half months that was handed over to him at the end of last year, now it has been raised to seven years.

Platicitor General Lucy Rigby KC MP said: 'FGM is a nauseating crime and this government is determined to eradicate practice as part of our mission to halve violence against women and girls.

“This perpetrator was intended to bring a grotesque physical and mental suffering to a child. The court has rightly decided to increase his sentence to reflect the seriousness of his crime.

“This was a milestone shop, and I would like to recommend the work of the CPS to successfully prosecute for the first time a complaint for conspiracy to commit FGM.”

The 48-year-old, who had lived in Swansea prior to his prison sentence, was also planning to have forced his victim in marriage.

After this week's statement, Chief Crown Officer of Justice described for CPS Midlands Janine McKinney FGM as a 'horrible' crime.

“This milestone shop sends a strong message to perpetrators – just because a crime was committed somewhere else in the world, don't stop you from being prosecuted,” she said.

'During the trial we presented proof that the suspect considered his behavior as normal. Nowadays, Emad Kaky has confronted with the consequences of his actions in trying to have a child who is subject to female genital mutilation and are not forced in a marriage of her choice.

“The law is clear that there is no room for this unacceptable practice in society and the Crown Prosecution Service, police and other law enforcement agencies to bring perpetrators to court.”

During Kady's two -week test last year, the Duncan Atkinson KC officer said at the time of the violation that the perpetrator had lived in Nottingham.

He said: 'There are a number of different types of FGM that have been identified by the World Health Organization … It does include the encounter of serious injury to the woman it is being executed.

'There were messages between the suspect and [a witness] In which he said: “This issue will last less than two days, she will not die, many people practice it, and all my tribe had done it and they lead a normal life, nothing happened to them. This is not killing, this is something normal ”

“The suspect was arrested and interviewed. Two mobile phones were seized, one single, but not all of the messages on screenshots that were taken out [a witness’s] telephone. The missing messages that refer to FGM. '

During the first trial, the court heard in mitigation how no FGM procedure was performed with the victim who 'completely did not know what KAKY was planned'.

The former professor, who has no previous convictions, has been sentenced to seven years in prison and placed in the sex offense register for life.
