The local population has been evacuated from their houses after a huge zinc hole has swallowed part of a main street in Surrey.

A cordon is in place on Godstone High Street and the road is closed between Oxted Road and Bletchingley Road.

A small number of buildings have been evacuated and some houses are currently without water.

The zinc hole is estimated at at least 19 meters (62 ft) long and at least 3m (10ft) wide, the BBC reports.

SES Water said on Tuesday in a statement at 12:50 pm that it was aware of a burst water main pipe on Godstone High Street.

In an update, a spokesperson said that there were no repairs yet – and confirmed that the Burst “water supply had influenced houses in the area.”

A frustrated local said on social media: 'I hope you want to set up water stations soon … This is a joke.

'We have vulnerable people in the community. The local stores are gone. Where is our water? '

In the meantime, another resident added: 'All local stores are out of the water in the area.

“So we need some information about what will happen to water stocks.”

In their most recent update, SES Water asked residents to avoid Godstone High Street – and confirmed that customers will be delivered in their 'Priority Service Register' bottle water.

A spokesperson said: 'Customers within RH1 and RH9 are currently experiencing problems with water supply, due to a burst -Main on Godstone High Street.

'We work in pace with important partners, including UK Power Networks, SGN and emergency services to ensure that we can safely repair the main as quickly as possible.

'Road users must avoid traveling near Godstone High Street – there is a signed distraction route in place. Customers in our Priority Service Register are supplied by our teams bottled this morning.
