The price of food and non-alcoholic drinks also rose in the year to January to increase total inflation.
And the ONS pointed to an increase in private school costs, which Labor has now made to VAT as part of their tax -increasing plans, as a different engine of inflation.
The CPI percentage for the 12 months to January was higher than predicted by analysts, who had predicted a percentage of approximately 2.8 percent and was at the highest level for 10 months.
It will be a huge blow to Chancellor Rachel Reeves, who, since her budget in October last year, has confronted huge questions about her steward of the economy.
There will also be an increased pressure on the Bank of England to consider further interest rates in their attempt to maintain inflation around their goal interest rate of 2 percent.
The tories fell to the increase in inflation on Mrs Reeves's tax and leen package and said that British 'all paid the prize' for the Labor promotion.
The liberal -Democrats also said that the 'miserable policy' of the Chancellor Groot -Britain in the risk of a 'new era of stagflation' because of the slow economic growth of the UK.
Mrs Reeves – who is also confronted with claims about the accuracy of her CV – is currently under enormous pressure for her spring statement next month.
In order to stay within her 'iron -covered' tax rules, the Chancellor will probably have to lower the expenses than she was planning – if she wants to avoid further tax increases – because of the retention of growth and higher loan costs.

In commentary on inflation figures, our Chief Economist Grant Fitzner said: 'Inflation has risen sharply this month to the highest annual rate since March last year.
'The turnout was driven by air rates that did not fall as much as we usually see at this time of the year, partly affected by the timing of flights during Christmas and New Year. This was the weakest dip in January since 2020.
“After this time fell last year, the costs of food and non-alcoholic drinks, in particular meat, bread and grains, increased.”
Tory Shadow Chancellor Mel Stride said: 'Today's inflation figures mean further pain for family finances – and it is due to the record tax increases of the Labor Chancellor and Inflation Busting Pay rises.
'Labor was warned that their tax expenditure and loaning Spree would yield inflation.
'It means higher prices in the stores, and interest rates remain higher longer, causing a mortgage to cause millions.
“This Chancellor is from its depth and we all pay the price.”
Lib DEM leader Sir Ed Davey said: 'The misguided policy of the Chancellor brings us in the risk of a new era of intern.
'The economy is still not growing, and now people are also being hit in their pockets.
“The conservative government collapsed Groot -Britain into a cost of living crisis and the failures of Labor are simply the misery to and through.
“The government urgently needs to change course and take real action to grow our economy strongly and to reduce the costs of living, starting with canceling their disastrous job tax and concluding a much better trade agreement with Europe.”
Mrs. Reeves said: 'Getting more money in people's pockets is my number one mission.
“Since the elections, we have seen the year in annual wages after inflation that grew with their fastest rate – on average worth an extra £ 1,000 a year – but I know that millions of families still have trouble making ends meet.”
In a round of TV and Radio interviews this morning, the police described -minister Diana Johnson that jumped to 3 percent last month as a 'bump in the way'.
She told Sky News: 'I'm going to tell you that we have only been to power for seven months.
'We have had 14 years of economic stagnation, so I think there is clear work that is going on with the Chancellor.
“But I know that the IMF and the OECD say that we will have the fastest growing economy in Europe.”
