Former home of the Dambusters is left looking like bomb site after plans to house asylum seekers collapse into chaos

The former Huis van de Dambusters has been left as a bomb site after plans to accommodate asylum seekers on the historic site that collapsed into chaos.

Shocking aerial photos revealed the size of the widespread loss of the airport of the Second World War, where Guy Gibson and the other heroes of the bouncing bomb attack were based on German dams.

The former Lincolnshire Airbase was reserved by the former government of Tory for migrants who cross the channel in rubber boat or are smuggled in other ways.

But now the temporary accommodation for the refugees had to be removed after the Home Office was warned to open the site, as planned last fall, taxpayers would cost £ 122 million at the end of the planned life in 2027.

About £ 60 million had already been spent on the site by the home office – so the total costs for the public wallet if it were opened would have been more than £ 180 million.

RAF Scampon is still owned by the Home Office, but it is ready to close a deal with the local authority at a £ 300 million scheme to create a new future for the huge piece of land.

The work to close the site has begun and the sale will take place as soon as the process for throwing away Crown Land has been completed.

West Lindsey District Council said: 'The council is committed to working with Scampton Holdings Limited to realize the potential of the site.

'The council will remain in contact of the Home Office on its intention to buy the site.

“The Council works together with the home office to ensure that all work already completed on the site can be taken out of use and can be sensitive to protect the important heritage of the site.”

Sally Grindrod-Smith, director of planning, regeneration and communities for the council said: 'We acknowledge that this period was particularly difficult for our community, very locally to Scampton.

“We are lucky that we have had the support and support of the locals who understood the enormous potential in the future of this site from the first day and we want to build on to learn while we are making progress together.”

The Ministry of Defense was forced to close the site to save money. West Lindsey District Council had already agreed £ 300 million to turn it into a company, space travel and heritage center in March 2023 – only a few weeks before the home office's announcement.

Residents campaigned for 18 months to tear the plans.

In 2023, the bosses of the council said that the proposals were 'illegal' and should be destroyed in the midst of a bitter legal struggle to prevent the plans from continuing.

West Lindsey District Council argued against the government plan to accommodate migrants, while the locals maintained an almost constant wake for weeks outside the base and claimed that they were in a struggle for the 'heritage' of the base.
