A man who was held by Border Force officers at Manchester airport for 'unusual acting' died in custody.

It is understood that the 27-year-old man was stopped when he went through security at Terminal Two in Manchester Airport yesterday.

The Manchester Evening News reported that the man was subsequently held for drug offenses.

While he was in custody, he became 'unwell' and died shortly thereafter.

Police and paramedics were called to the airport where the man was declared dead at 1.53 pm.

Now the Independent Office for Police Behavior (IOPC) has started an investigation into the death of the man with questions that are performed.

The man's family has been informed and are supported by specialized officers.

In a statement, the IOPC said to MailOnline: 'We can confirm that we independently investigate the circumstances of the death of a 27-year-old man after his arrest by Border Force Officers at Manchester Airport on Wednesday 19 February.

'Our research follows a reference from the home office in which it was detailed how the man would travel from the airport on Wednesday and stopped after showing unusual behavior.

“He was then arrested by officers and taken to a holding area where he became unwell and paramedics were called. Unfortunately he was declared dead at 1.53 pm.

'After we were informed of the man's death, we spent an independent investigation into the circumstances on Wednesday at 169.

“IOPC researchers were sent to the scene to collect evidence.”

IOPC director Amanda Rowe said: 'First and foremost, our thoughts are with the family and the loved ones of the man, as well as all those who were hit by his death.

'When someone dies after being taken into custody, it is important that there is a thorough investigation to understand what happened.

'We have had contact with the man's family to explain our role and will keep them informed as the investigation progresses. Our research is at a very early stage and there is currently no further information available. '
