The state of the pope was stable and he had shown 'slight improvement' in the results of recent blood tests, the Vatican said in a statement on Wednesday evening.
Francis received a visit on Wednesday from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, his first well -known VIP visitor in the hospital. She said he was 'alert and responsive'.
The pope joked with Meloni about some people who bet at his death, reported the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera on Thursday.
“He did not lose his proverbial sense of humor,” Meloni said in a statement.
