A man died and another is in custody after a welfare check is said to have become an impasse with the police.
The NSW police were called to a unit on Goonoo Goonoo Road in Tamworth, in the north of the state, around 4.30 pm on Saturday after reports of a caring for well -being.
Officers arrived to find a 47-year-old man with critical head injury and a 55-year-old man reportedly armed with a knife.
The 47-year-old man was treated on the spot and rushed to the Tamworth Base Hospital where he was declared dead.
In the meantime, the 55-year-old man has reportedly locked himself up in a bedroom before climbing on the roof of the house.
The police secured the area and called officers of tactical operations regional support and police negotiators on the spot.
While officers talked to the 55-year-old, he fell off the roof.
“He was treated by paramedics for stab wounds in his chest before he was brought to the Tamworth Base Hospital, where he stays under police protection in a serious but stable state,” said the NSW police in a statement.

It is understood that the two men were known to each other.
A crime scene was founded in the house and detectives associated with Oxley Police District who set up the strike power Elsner to investigate the incident.
The murder team of the State Crime Command will also help with the research.
