Pope Francis health latest: Live updates as Vatican confirm pontiff is in critical condition

Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church, remains in a critical condition with kidney failure, has announced the Vatican.

Earlier this month, 88-year-old Pope has a treatment for pneumonia and a complex lung infection in the Gemelli hospital of Rome in the Gemelli hospital of Rome and warned that he warned non-confidence person.

Appointed pope in 2013, Francis led a relatively progressive but controversial papacy that women have seen to allow key roles, the recognition of LGBT + rights and the Vatican start to tackle the Catholic child abuse scandals.

What would happen if the pope died?

With Francis who experiences the longest hospitalization of his papacy, the Catholic world is preparing for the worst.

Last year he approved a more stripped back -version of a papal funeral for himself, whereby he had lost some of the more archaic rituals that traditionally come up with such an event.

But still, the series of events that would happen if the pope were to die, there is one that has been tightened in the course of the centuries, with some aspects that go back to ancient Rome.

And in the end there would be an election to select the new Catholic leader – just like in the Oscar -nominated film Conclave (depicted, Ralph Fiennes as Cardinal Thomas Lawrence) – watch over the spiritual life of a billion people around the world.

We will split the process into four parts: his death, funeral and mourning period and the elections that follow.

Pope marks his 11th day in the hospital

The One-Line Update of this morning's Vatican and said that the pope was resting after a good night's sleep, did not mention whether Francis had woken up.

Last night, doctors reported that blood tests showed early kidney failure – but it was under control.

He remains in critical condition, but has not experienced any further breathing crises since Saturday when he had a long -term asthmatic attack.

He received large amounts of oxygen and yesterday he was alert, responsive and went to the masses.

Doctors have said that the state of the Pontiff touches and goes, given its age, vulnerability and already existing chronic lung disease.

They have warned that the most important threat he is confronted with is sepsis, a serious infection of the blood that can happen as a complication of pneumonia.

But the Vatican himself has not yet mentioned Sepsis in his regular updates about his condition.

Francis spent ten days in the Gemelli hospital in 2021 after he had removed part of his colon.
