A schizophrenic man brutally killed a Travelodge recoveryist after a series of mistakes saw him moving to a hotel without medication, a coroner ruled.

Stephen Cole, then 32, Savagely fell the Spanish National Marta Elena Vento, 27, who worked on the Travelodge in Christchurch Road in Bournemouth, with a set of her clippers on December 9, 2020.

Cole attacked her during a psychotic episode and hit her with a care device in an attack of 42 minutes.

Cole, described as 'completely disconnected', was released from prison despite the reserves of a prison psychiatrist.

He had left prison with only a four -week stock of the antipsychotic drug that kept his condition stable.

He was later seen by various health care professionals and police officers before the fatal attack.

Nowadays, Dorset judge Rachael Griffin ruled that Mrs. Vento was killed illegally.

“When he wasn't a medicine, he was unpredictable and violent. If he had not been actively psychotic, her death would not have taken place, “she said.

“This arose because of the system failure that created a real and significant risk to life.”

'The lack of sufficient staff at that time led him to be released without significant medication and a considerable risk of life.

“Marta was unlawfully killed by another who was not intended for a mental illness because of the fact that he was not enough for his care in his release from prison.”

A prison care company, called the Practice Plus Group (PPG), failed to ensure that a care plan was drawn up for Cole or his former general practitioner informed of his release.

His medication rose at the end of November and he had trouble getting another recipe.

After he was released from prison, he was arrested on December 4 for attacking guests and guards in his emergency accommodation hotel, but was saved the next day before a practitioner decided whether he could have been assessed further.

In the following days he tried to collect more medication desperately, but he couldn't.

He was later moved to the Travelodge at Christchurch Road, Bournemouth, Dorset, with staff not told about his condition or his violent eruptions.

On December 7, a police offender manager visited sexual or violent perpetrators, Cole at the Travelodge and described him as 'completely disconnected' and 'almost empty'.

The coroner said there was a “systemic failure within PPG Care” that created a series of events that led to her death

However, he was unable to inform Travelodge staff about the danger that he or guests gave them and just left.

The next day the father of Cole 999 called and took him to a doctor about his mental health problems and said it was the worst state he had seen him in.

But the doctor, who was not aware of Cole's violent past, refused to renew his recipe without first getting advice from a psychiatrist.

Hours later Cole Mrs Vento, 27, who only worked at the hotel's reception.

The Spaniard had just started working in the hotel and lived over the road.

She died of several blunt troop head injuries, with 55 injuries registered in a Mortem investigation post.

Her body was discovered by the manager a few hours later.

In 2021 Cole argued guilty of manslaughter due to reduced responsibility and was held in the hospital under the Mental Health Act for an indefinite period of time.

The coroner said there was a “systemic failure within PPG Care” that created a series of events that led to her death.

“It is overwhelmingly difficult for us to understand how the English prison health system could allow someone like Stephen Cole, who was so clearly unwell, to be released without a care plan and the continuous medication he needed,” said Mrs. Vento's family

“Our daughter paid for her life for falling in the English prison and police systems,” her family added

“If PPG had planned the release -care and made a reference to the NHS, he would not have fallen back and therefore he would not have come into contact with Marta.”

In a statement, Mrs. Vento's family said: 'Today's conclusion confirms what we suspected in the four long years since our dear Marta was torn apart from our lives.

'It is overwhelmingly difficult for us to understand how the English prison health system could allow someone like Stephen Cole, who was so clearly unwell, to be released without a care plan and the continuous medication he needed.

'It is just as difficult for us to understand why the English police did not make themselves fully aware of the danger that Cole occurred when he stayed in the Travelodge that night.

'With her life, our daughter paid for falling in the English prison and police systems. The costs for our family can never be measured. Without our Marta our lives will never be the same. '

Benjamin Burrows, the lawyer who represents the family, said: “The clear conclusion is that the death of Marta would have been avoided in just 27 years.

“If Practice Plus Group offered the continuity of care to Stephen Cole about his release from HMP Winchester, this would probably have meant that he remained in his medication and he would not have fallen back into psychosis.”

'The same thing would have happened if the Dorset police had well assessed and managed the risk of Cole.

“One of those steps would have prevented Cole Marta. This is very difficult for the family to come to terms, but ultimately gives them the answers they have waited for.
