People have been warned to leave or to prepare for the worst, with a tropical cyclone on schedule to cross a densely populated part of the coast of Australia for the first time in 50 years.
Tropical Cyclone Alfred appears on the coast of Queensland and threatens to bring heavy rainfall, to damage winds and monster waves.
It is predicted between K'Gari van Queensland (formerly Fraser Island) and the Gold Coast on Thursday or Friday as a category one or two system.
In Brisbane alone, 20,000 houses were at risk of flooding, with a further 6,000 houses in danger to the Gold Coast, according to local council modeling.
The suburbs of Brighton, Windsor, Ashgrove, Morningside, Rocklea, Coopers Plains, Carina, Sandgate, Hemmant, Lota, Tingalpa, Indooroopilly, Albion, Bardon and Wynnum West are most at risk.
On the Gold Coast are the suburbs that run the most risk of tropical cyclone Alfred are surfers Paradise, Paradise Point and Elanora.
Mayor of Brisbane Lord Adrian Schinner urged the residents to evacuate.
“These 20,000 properties can experience everything, from small floods in their yards to significant floods in houses,” he said.
