Tropical Cyclone Alfred live updates: What Aussies need to know as it barrels towards coast

Queensland -schools remain open today despite the threatening threat of tropical cyclone Alfred.

The Queensland Department of Education said that schools will remain open on Wednesday, while schools at North Stradbroke and Moreton Bay Islands will only be open to supervision.

“Tropical Cyclone Alfred is expected to cross the coast of southeastern Queensland, either at the end of Thursday evening or early Friday morning,” said a spokesperson.

“We will continue to follow the weather conditions and, where necessary, take action to guarantee the safety of our students, staff and the broader community.”

Queensland -Prime Minister David Crisafulli warned that there was a 'very strong' chance that they could close when Alfred crosses the coast.

“This is certainly an event that doesn't happen much for this part of the state, but it's not unprecedented and I ask Queenslanders to be ready,” he said.

Thousands have fled all their houses while tropical cyclone Alfred is on the east coast of Australia.

The cyclone was intensified to a two-system category when it changed course and was on its way to the coast of Southeast Queensland.

Last recorded 510 km east of Brisbane at the end of Tuesday, tropical cyclone Alfred will make landing north of the city at the end of Thursday or early Friday, causing destructive winds up to 130 km/h, rain, dangerous surfing conditions and large floods.

Authorities have insisted millions in two states between Noosa heads on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland and Ballina in Noord -NSW to prepare for evacuating or falling down.

Voluntary evacuations started on Tuesday at Stradbroke Island when police door houses hundreds of houses in low areas between the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coasts Knocked.

Southeast Queensland is hours away from an abrupt stop with schools, university campuses, theme parks from Gold Coast, offices and public transport systems, all closing on Thursday.
