Cyclone Alfred has been delayed to more than half the speed of a typical cyclone, in what experts have mentioned the sausage case scenario.
Although millions of residents in the warning zone may think that the system is delayed to only 7 km/h is good news, meteorologists warned that Alfred's relaxed approach will help to get strength.
Weatherzone -meteorologist Ben Domenensino explained that the change in speed 'Southeast -Queensland and Noordoost -NSW can expose to heavy weather for longer'.
'While Alfred was previously expected that it will come ashore about Southeast -Queensland on Thursday evening or early Friday morning, it is now more likely to approach the coast later on Friday. This will delay the most intense weather of the system, “he said.
A new tracking card from the Bureau of Meteorology shows Alfred Making Landfall, possibly directly over Brisbane, at 7 p.m. on Friday (local time).
“The center of Alfred is expected to cross the coast in Friday and notes that the last weather model data indicates the potential for a later intersection time than previously indicated,” the agency said.
“Location of intersection is still probably between Maroochydore and Coolangatta.”
It used to be expected that Alfred came ashore in the early hours of Friday morning, probably at 2 am, only an hour after a flood of 1 hour in Brisbane.

Cyclone Alfred has been delayed to more than half the speed of a typical cyclone, in what experts have called the sausage case scenario

“The storm flood of Alfred will have the biggest impact on flooding if it coincides with the astronomical flood, so the timing of the coastal approach of Alfred is important for the size and seriousness of coastal flooding and erosion,” said Mr Domensino.
Despite the fact that he was still more than 300 km away from the east coast of Australia, Alfred already pulled parts of Northeast -Nsw and Southeast -Queensland with powerful winds, rain and massive waves on Wednesday.
The predicted effects of the Cycloon is the predicted landing zone in a very populated area.
“The distant western edge of the Cycloon already influences the coast from about Coolangatta to Ballina,” said the Bureau of Meteorology.
The agency will update its advice at 9 am AEDT.
