West Virginia is completely ready to ban seven synthetic dyes that are linked to cancer and behavioral problems.

Huis Bill 2354 was originally introduced to the House of Representatives and was hired on 28 February with a vote of 93-5. It was then sent to the Senate.
During the third reading, however, the bill was changed to implement the production prohibition from 2027 to 2028 by the Senate and then passed on earlier today with a 31-2 votes.
The updated account has now been sent to the House of Representatives for their decision.
As soon as the house and the senate pass the same version of the bill, it goes to Governor Patrick Morrisey for his signature.
The amended bill aims to ban the use of the artificial dyes in food programs for school with effect from 1 August with an exception for fundraisers in school.
It is also intended to prohibit the sale of products made with the dyes from January 1, 2028, so that manufacturers can comply with time and coordinate with the ban of California's own dye paint.

Senate Health President Laura Wakim Chapman, a Republican from Ohio who spoke to the bill on the floor, noticed that thousands of West -Virginians 'live without access to healthy and nutritious food' and are not aware of how toxic colors are for their health.
She said: 'We owe our children and grandchildren a better morning. No more toxic colors, no longer poisoning ourselves and our children, no longer unnecessary risks. Our health is not for sale. '
After the approval of the Senate, she added: 'This is probably the most important bill that we will vote for throughout our career.
'Remember this day, because this will be the start of making our state and our children healthier. This bill, if signed in the law, will lead us first in food safety in West Virginia. '
The FDA recently ordered that Red 3 must be removed from food by 2027 and by 2028 medicines due to the ties with cancer.
Red 3 is responsible for bright red colors in sweets such as skittles and lollipops.
Studies show that the dye in high doses is highly associated with cancer in animals and is linked to behavioral problems in children.

Blauw 2 – Consistent in sports drinks – and green 3 – found in canned vegetables and salad dressings – appear to cause increased tumor growth in animals, in particular in the bladder and testes.
Butylated hydroxyanisol (BHA) and propyl parabs are found in many foods, including butter, beer, vegetable oils, chips and salted meat such as ham.
In March 2024, State of New York officials introduced two new accounts that called for the prohibition of Red 3, Propylparaben, brominated vegetable oil (BVO), potassium bromat, titanium dioxide, azodicarbonamide and BHA.
