Construction teams descended on Black Lives Matter Plaza in Washington, DC Monday to erase a bright yellow mural that has been opposite the White House since 2020.
The name of the movement was set out on the road in gigantic 35-foot long letters after the death of George Floyd.
It is a stone's throw from the White House and was a pointed push against the brutality of the police.
In recent weeks, however, a GOP proposal in the congress threatened to draw the financing of the local government of Washington, unless the square is renamed and removed the expression 'Black Lives Matter' from the street.
About a dozen construction workers equipped with pick -axes, Jackhammers and John Deere building vehicles were cut, cut and cut away parts of the instillation on Monday morning.

The removal of the mural comes after a Republican legislator has introduced a bill to strip DC financing, unless action was taken to eliminate public work
The mural was founded during the 2020 protests after the murder of George Floyd by police officer Derek Chauvin in Minneapolis, Minnesota

Rep. Andrew Clyde, R-Ga., Who introduced the Anti-BLM square proposal, also celebrated the removal of the wall painting on Monday.
“A week after I introduced legislation to rename Black Lives Matter Plaza, his employees started dismantling,” he posted. “Make DC great again!”
The measure of Clyde, which still has yet to be voted, would 'withhold certain distribution funds from the district of Columbia, unless the mayor removes the expression of Black Lives from the street.
It designed the area as Liberty Plaza and removes the such meaning of each website, document and other material under the jurisdiction of the District of Columbia. '
After he originally stated that the bright yellow BLM wall painting would be permanent, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser revealed last week that she will transform the square after the Republican account had been introduced.
“The mural inspired millions and helped our city through a very painful period,” said Bowser.
“But now we can't afford to be distracted by meaningless congress interference.”
The wall painting is only on blocks of the White House and has been a popular meeting point for protests in Washington
'The devastating effects of the federal job reductions must be our most important care. Our focus is on economic growth, public safety and supporting our residents who have been hit by these cuts, “she said.
Bowser wrote on social media that the 'evolution' of the Plaza will be part of celebrating the 250th birthday of America in July 2026, a national attempt to renew cities and places to commemorate the birthday.
“We have long taken into account the evolution of Black Lives Matter Plaza and the Plaza will be part of DC's America 250 Mural Project, where we will invite students and artists to create new murals over all eight departments,” Bowser said.
The construction of the square is expected to take six to eight weeks, according to the district department of Transport.
