Prime Minister Keir Starmer Tonight welcomed a 30-day ceasefire proposal that Ukraine has agreed and said that it was now up to Russia to put an end to the fighting.
Starmer congratulated both Ukrainian President Volodyymyr Zenskiy and US President Donald Trump for the 'remarkable breakthrough'.
The British leader said he would use a meeting of world leaders that brings Britain together on Saturday to discuss the next steps.
He said: 'This is an important moment for peace in Ukraine and we now all have to double our efforts to get a permanent and secure peace as quickly as possible.
'As both American and Ukrainian delegations have said, the ball is now in the Russian court. Russia must now agree with a cease -the fire and also an end to the fighting.
'I will convene leaders this Saturday to discuss the next steps. We are ready to help put an end to this war in a just and permanent way that enables Ukraine to enjoy freedom. '
The agreement, under intense pressure on the American side, now places the ball in the court of Moscow, said Minister of Foreign Affairs Marco Rubio at the end of a day of conversations with Ukrainian officers in Saudi -Arabia.
“Today we made an offer that the Ukrainians have accepted, namely a cease -the fire and immediate negotiations to terminate this conflict in a way that is permanent and sustainable,” said Rubio.
The Trump administration now intends to present the temporary cessation -the supply of Moscow to present a series of requirements.
