A British tourist is confronted with a maximum of 10 years in prison after being arrested because he reportedly tried to smuggle 38 kilos of cannabis through an airport in Thailand while trying on board a flight back to London.
Daniel James Hallett, 38, Van Hull, was held by customs officers, because he reportedly tried on board the flight from Krabi's international airport in the south of the country on March 9.
Officials had marked his luggage as suspicious during routine security checks. At the further inspection, they reportedly discovered 35 vacuum-through-transmission packages of cannabis flowers wrapped in double-laying bags to prevent the comprehensive scent of the drug escaping.
Hallett, which ran a transport company, was photographed by watching the airport while wearing a T-shirt from the charity setting from the armed forces to starboard. He had two gigantic suitcases that are reportedly containing the medicines.
The cannabis was seized and Hallett was taken into custody at the police station of Na Khlong District for further legal action. His case is currently being investigated and the authorities continue to revise evidence with regard to the smuggling attempt.
The Brit was accused of violating the Thai Customs Act, and violating laws on controlled herbs. If he is convicted, he could be sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Police Colonel Apichat Jinaphen, chief inspector of the police station of Nuea Khlong, said: 'Although cannabis is not illegal in Thailand, importing or exporting without permission against the law is.
'In this case, Mr. Daniel was arrested for trying to export goods that had not undergone a customs defense, contrary to the Customs Act, as well as the traditional Thai Medicine Protection and Promotion Act with regard to controlled herbs (cannabis) for commercial purposes.

“Mr Daniel was held at the police station for two days before he was brought to court. The legal fine includes a prison sentence for a maximum of ten years, a fine or both, in addition to the seizure of the seized items. The final decision will be made by the court.
