A chartered accountant who killed a retired person in a frontal crash after falling asleep with his children with his children in the back, the prison was spared.

Jason Rana, 39, plowed in the 70-year-old Renate Soltys' car after he was unable to negotiate a turn on the 60 MPH B3230 in Muddiford, North Devon, and crossed to oncoming cars.

Rana, Van Barnstaple, Devon, admitted that he caused death by careless driving in June 2023.

Miss Victoria Bastock, defensive, said he was full of regret for the tragic outcome of the incident.

He told the police that he 'gave away and was stripped by what happened' with the victim who died on the spot.

Judge Anna Richardson sentenced him to a community order of 18 months and told to perform unpaid work for 150 hours.

Divorced Rana, who has no previous convictions, was also forbidden to drive for 12 months.
