Department of Education Secretary Linda McMahon defended its decision to reduce 1,300 functions of her department, as part of the general goal of President Donald Trump to close the federal agency.
She described the cutbacks as the 'first step of eliminating what I think is bureaucratic bloat' in an interview with Fox News gas host Laura Ingraham on Tuesday evening.
“When I got there, I said,” Okay, we have to determine where the bloat is where the bureaucracy is and starts there, “she said, explaining her decision to close the federal educational buildings on Wednesday.
McMahon announced on Tuesday evening that all offices would be closed for safety reasons on Wednesday and told employees to take their laptops home to work from home.
“I appreciate the work of the dedicated officials and their contributions to the department,” she said in a statement. “This is an important step in the direction of restoring the greatness of the education system of the United States.”
She defended the announcement as a 'standard business practice' and said that dismissed employees could return and collect their personal effects and say goodbye to a later day.
McMahon admitted that it was a dramatic step at work at the age of five, but she said it was part of President Trump's promise to the American people.
“That was the mandate and the president's guideline for me,” she said.
