After a prison sentence of 20 years, SLD was briefly released in Wollongong NSW in September 2023 before he quickly returned in detention after violating conditions.

But with the current interim detention mix that ended on Saturday, an official attempt to keep him in prison was heard in the NSW Supreme Court.

On Friday, Justice Mark Ierace led to confusion when he published a two words statement that Chaos caused: “Application refused.”

It was initially unclear what exactly was meant by the decision, which made chaotic scenes to be activated when civil servants made it clear that he had refused the application for the NSW government for long -term detention and issued SLD, subject to his original supervisory order.

SLD ran free from Long Bay Prison, in Sydney's Inner-Zouth, at 10.18 am on Saturday, with a red flannel shirt and blue pants and accompanied by two other men.

He stared down news cameras while they recorded his first moments of freedom while they walked to a waiting car with his personal effects – and what a bundle seemed to be legal papers – in a transparent plastic bag.

After climbing in the backseat of the Sedan next to one of the men, he continued to sparkle at photographers and other spectators before he was driven away from the prison.

Although SLD did not speak during the last-minute two-day hearing prior to his release, he sent a hair-raising warning to his lawyer from his Long Bay Holding Cell.

On Wednesday morning, his lawyer wished a happy birthday, while the murderer was solemnly in front of the Videolink.

After a short break, he bent his head to the microphone.

“Better,” he replied ominously, before he returned to the same expressionless pose that he maintained all day long.

During the hearing, psychiatrists noted that the murderer, who is fixed with revenge on observed mistakes, could act violently if he felt that he was being treated unfairly.

However, they also agree that holding him would be harmful to his mental health and the ability to assimilate in the community at a later date.

On Tuesday, Justice Ierace noted that the situation was unusual.

“It goes without saying that this is a very challenging matter, he has only been in the community for four months since he was only 13 years old,” he said.

Justice Ierace had options to impose a continuous detention warrant to keep him behind bars for 12 months, or granting the extensive supervisory order.

Although there are circumstances around his release, SLD has previously admitted that he would be willing to kill again if something 'big' took place.

In a hair -raising warning, he added: “If I kill someone, it won't be a child.”

His terrifying confession and a series of violent violations, including the choking of a nurse while he was imprisoned, were all taken into consideration by Justice Ierace.

After SLD was last released in September 2023, after a few weeks later he was back behind bars after being caught on approaching women with young children on Bulli Beach in Wollongong, NSW who claimed he wanted a date.

He was convicted in August 2002 to 20 years behind the bars, but was first released in September 2023.
