However, when Lola's cancer was finally ready to be investigated again, her doctors delivered the devastating news.
“She was about to have her bone marrow cells tested for cancer cells, but tragically without knowledge of us and the doctors, she had sustained a deadly fungal infection that quickly spread,” Salina said.
Only one day after the doctor's moving discovery said Zimmer that Lola's heart stopped and that she could no longer breathe alone.
“Seeing your daughter on lifestination that no longer responds is really difficult, and then let the doctors tell you that the fungal infection she has is untreatable and has to say goodbye, it is traumatic,” said the desperate father.
Only a few days later the heart-broken family was told that their little girl “would not come.”
“We were told that she wouldn't make it and call our family to say goodbye to our sweet, precious Lola girl,” said her grandmother.
Aguilar suspected that the chemo destroyed the immune system of her daughter.
“I get frustrated and angry that she could have defeated cancer, but she could not have defeated fungal infection,” said Aguilar.
While they process the loss, Zimmer and Aguilar have found a new meaning in butterflies and cherries. Both were symbols of hope connected to Lola and now embody the 'vulnerability of life'.
“Cherish every moment and tell people you love them,” said Zimmer.
“Tell your children that you love them and kiss them goodnight,” Aguilar added.
