How Australia stacks up in new ranking of the world’s happiest countries by the University of Oxford

Australia is no longer one of the top 10 happiest countries in the world according to a new global study.

The University of Oxford released its latest Global Happiness Ranking Report on Thursday.

Finland achieved first place for the eighth year in a row, while Australia landed at number 11 and let one place of number 10 slide in 2024.

The rest of the top five was exclusively European with Denmark, Iceland, Sweden and Dutch landing as second to the fifth.

Oxford's World Happiness Report had finished new Zeeland just behind Australia in the twelfth position, according to the Wellbeing Research Center of the university.

Other countries that managed to reach the top 10 were Costa Rica, Norway, Israel, Luxembourg and Mexico.

This ranking is based on three -year averages of self -reported welfare scores from 147 countries.

More than 100,000 people participants arranged their general satisfaction on a scale from zero to ten based on the possibility and reassurance that their country offers them.

One of the editors of the report, Jan-Emmanuel De Neve, said that this year's results were more account of factors such as wealth and health when assessing overall happiness.

“It appears that sharing meals and trusting others are even stronger predictors of well -being than expected,” he said.

“In this era of social isolation and political polarization, we must find ways to bring people around the table again – this is crucial for our individual and collective well -being.”

Generosity, social support and household size also played an important role in influencing the answers of the survey.

In Mexico and Europe, the average household size can accommodate four or five people who correspond to the level of happiness of both country, according to the study.

The chairman of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network, Jeffrey D Sachs, said that the results of the Landen report can help to get better in the future.

“The findings in this year's World Happiness report confirm a fundamental truth again: happiness is rooted in trust, kindness and social connection,” he said.

While Europe dominated the top 20 -slots, several other Western countries fell to their lowest position in years.

The US landed in the lowest ranking ever at number 24, well below the peak of 11th place in 2012.

In the past two decades, the amount of people who said they were only dined by 53 percent.

The UK was only a little better and came in when the 23rd happiest country in the world, which was the lowest worst performance since 2017.

The oustest land of the earth was Afghanistan, which also made the unfavorable distinction in the 2024 report.

Afghan women in particular reported that their lives were difficult thanks to the serious limitations that were introduced by the Taliban regime.

Sierra Leone in West -Africa was the second unfortunate and Lebanon was in third place from below.
