Former Yankees star Brett Gardner has announced the tragic death of his youngest son, Miller, at the age of only 14.
In a statement, Brett and Jessica Gardner revealed that the teenager became ill – 'together with various other family members' – during vacation, but that 'so many questions' continue to exist.
“With heavy hearts we are sad to announce the death of our youngest son, Miller,,” said the family.
“He was 14 years old and left us far too quickly after he got sick, along with various other family members during the vacation.
'We currently have so many questions and so few answers, but we do know that he died peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday, March 21.
“Miller was a beloved son and brother and we can't understand our lives without his contagious smile. He loved football, baseball, golf, hunting, fishing, his family and his friends. He fully lived every day.

'We are so grateful for everyone who has contacted to offer support and encouragement during this difficult time and we are convinced that our faith, family and friends will help us by navigating this unimaginable loss.
'Our prayers go to Miller's teammates and friends, as well as to all other families who have lost a child too quickly as soon as we share their grief. Respect our wishes for privacy while we mourn and look for healing. '
The Yankees also published a statement about the tragedy.
“Our hearts are tough and the Yankees family is filled with grief after learning the death of Miller Gardner,” the team said.
'Words feel insignificant and insufficient in trying to describe such an unimaginable loss. It was not only Brett who grew up in this organization for more than 17 years – also his wife, Jessica, and their two boys, Hunter and Miller. '
'We mourn with Brett, Jessica, Hunter and their community of family and friends to mourn the loss of Miller, who had a spark in his eyes, an extrovert and spicy personality and a warm and loving nature.
'Our love for the Gardner family is unconditional and absolute, and we will offer our lasting support, while we are currently understanding their desire for privacy.
“May Miller rest in peace.”
