Canada and Mexico can get some relief after Donald Trump said that 'mutual rates' may not be as hard as he ever promised.
Trump said on Monday that a rate of 25% on oil and gas from Venezuela will be implemented on April 2, a day that he claims will be 'Liberation Day in America'.
However, when he spoke in the Oval Office later that day, he was more flexible at some of the other rates, partly to make an example of their neighboring countries and allies.
Trump said, “We can assume less than what they charge because they have sued us so much, I don't think they can take it.”
“In other words, they have sued us so much that I am ashamed to ask them what they have sued us,” he added, although he did not specify for which countries he considered a reversal.
Trump said that some of his other rates for cars, wood, medicines and semiconductors can wait until later this year.
He still promised that 2 April would be 'Liberation Day' because they would take sufficient income to lower taxes and create jobs.
The US stock market had returned on Monday, because investors expect the rates would be more focused than they feared earlier.
