The police gave an update after a newborn baby was found dead in an M&S bag outside a church in West London.
In a statement on Wednesday, the mother of the child was appealed to come forward and said that it is 'vital importance that you will receive medical help and support'.
Superintendent Owen Renowden said he could now confirm that the baby was found outside All Saints Church in Notting Hill was a newborn boy.
He added that the horrible discovery was made yesterday afternoon by a counselor just before 1 p.m., who immediately contacted the police.
Tribute has since been left on the spot on Talbot Road, where the baby was declared dead by paramedics.
Superintendent Renowden described the case as 'shocking and tragic', but said that his priority remains the 'well -being and support' of the mother.
In a conversation with reporters in Notting Hill on Wednesday morning, he said: 'I know she will probably feel very scared and go through an extremely difficult time.
“If you are the baby's mother and you see this today, I want to address you directly to come forward and get help, my priority is to help you, to ensure that you can get medical help.”

Yesterday, officers were called at 12:46 pm to the All Saints Church on Talbot Road in the Notting Hill area where the body was found.
The London Ambulance Service also rushed to the scene, but the baby was tragically declared dead.
In a statement yesterday, Chief Inspector Renowden said: 'This is an extremely sad and shocking issue and officers are working hard to establish the circumstances around what has taken place.
'This research is in the early stages and our immediate priority is to find the mother of the baby, who we believe have very recently birth.
'If you are the baby's mother and read this, come to the police or medical professionals.
'You have to feel very scared, but please let us help – we are really worried about you and it is vital that you get medical help and support.
