British Steel today announced the proposed closure of its two blast furnaces, steel production activities and a reduction in steel rolling mill capacity in Scunthorpe.

The company had sought support from the government for a large capital investment in two new electric bow ovens – but no agreement has yet been reached after months of negotiations.
The three are now being taken into consideration, including the closing of the blast furnaces, steel operations and Scunthorpe Rod Mill in early June.
Also for consultation are the closing of the blast furnaces and steel activities in September or otherwise closing the blast furnaces and steel production activities at a future point after that month.
