The confrontational moment that a man from a drain pipe is pulled with mud covered after escaping the scene of a fatal crash is recorded in dramatic arrest images.
Andrew Julian Stewart-Smith, 29, rode a stolen Ute on September 22, 2023 in the 72-year-old YRSA Christofferson's Stationary Vehicle at a crossing of Kippa Ring north of Brisbane.
Mrs. Christofferson died on the spot, while her daughter Maria, 41, was brought to Royal Brisbane and Vrouwenziekenhuis with serious injuries.
Stewart-Smith fled the stage, but was followed by a police dog team to a drain pipe at 1.5 km from the busy intersection an hour later.
The then 27-year-old was covered in mud from head to toe when the police dragged him out of the pipe and held handcuffs around his wrists.
“You are currently being arrested for the dangerous effect of a motor vehicle causing death,” an officer is heard.
The Queensland police have claimed that De Ute was stolen from a house in Stafford, in the north of Brisbane, between September 18 and September 19.
Stewart-Smith was denied bail on 23 September at Brisbane Magistrates Court.
