Sir Keir Starmer has supported the idea that failed asylum seekers are sent from Great -Britain to return 'Hubs' overseas -but denied that it would be a repeat of the Rwanda schedule.
The prime minister said he would look at every policy to tackle illegal migration if they were cost -effective and did not break international law.
His comments came after the European Union states gave the green light to pay third countries to take migrants whose asylum claims have been rejected.
Great -Britain is expected to approach countries in the Balkans as Albania approaches and asks them if they want to set up the first centers for arrivals from countries such as Iran and Afghanistan, which cannot be returned to their home country.
It would differ from the flagship policy of the Tories to put illegal migrants on one-way flights to Rwanda without first allowing asylum, which was based by courts because judges ruled that the East African country was not a safe destination.
Asked at his most important top about immigration crime whether the UK looked at Retourhubs, Sir Keir replied: 'The in-principle approach we take is that we will look at everything that works.
'That must be clearly consistent with international law and it must be cost -effective – the Rwanda scheme was none of these.
“But we work together with other countries on everything we think it will work.”

He added that he had already been in Italy to have an 'in -depth discussion' with his Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni about her proposals for tackling illegal migration, including the processing of asylum seekers in Albania.
She said in a video message that was played on representatives at the organized Immigration Crime Summit in Lancaster House: 'A model that was initially criticized, but subsequently received increasing consensus, so much that the European Union proposes to set up returnhubs in third countries today. This means that we were right and that the courage to lead the way has been rewarded. '
The Premier also announced that the Home Office returned more than 24,000 people without the right to be in the UK since Labor took over.
There were 24,103 returns between 5 July and 22 March – the highest number for eight years – including 3,594 foreign criminals.
However, the number of people reaching the UK in rubber boats on the channel is also at record levels, with nearly 6,000 arrival so far this year.
Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp early in the commons: “Will the minister now accept the government's plan to” break the gangs “in covering? Minister of Immigration Dame Angela Eagle admitted on Times Radio: 'Of course we are disappointed. Part of it is about having more people by boat, which is also more dangerous and reckless.
“But what we have to do – we have been in the government for eight months – these people smuggle gangs can settle in the canal and be sophisticated with their global networks for six years.”
