A furniture that was tackled by a hero British tourist in Amsterdam dealt with terrorist intention and would probably have stabbed more victims, Dutch prosecutors said.
Thursday's knives led to panic in the streets of the Dutch capital after a 30-year-old from Donetsk, in the east of Ukraine, performed an apparently random knife attack on the street around Dam Square.
The attacker will remain in custody for at least two weeks, suspected of 'five counts of attempted murder or manslaughter with a terrorist intention', officers of justice said in a statement.
By wearing several knives, the man attacked people around the square before he was overwhelmed by a mysterious British man, believed to be in his thirty, who has since been called the “hero of the dam.”
The victims were a 67-year-old woman and a 69-year-old man, both from the United States, a 26-year-old man from Poland, a 73-year-old Belgian woman and a 19-year-old woman from Amsterdam.
Four of the victims stay in the hospital, but their condition is stable, the prosecutors said.
Amsterdam Mayor Feme Halsema thanked the British tourist, who remained anonymous, for his 'heroic act' who probably prevented more people from being attacked.
The attacker himself was injured in the leg and transferred to the medical wing of a detention unit in The Hague, where he is now being held in lonely imprisonment.

He did not tell the authorities about his motives for the attack, although local media reported that he has known the stabbing.
It comes after an expert told the mailonline that the British man who sprinted after the knives has 'almost certainly a military background'.
He impressively conquered the Ukrainian attacker just after his crazy attack on passers -by in the Dutch capital.
He sprinted behind the attacker and kicked his ankle, sent him crashing to the ground and then sat down on him until the police arrived.
The cool, calm courage of the Brit was later rewarded when the mayor of Amsterdam gave him a hero -insignia – but he chose to stay anonymous and only think of the victims.
Now a former member of the Parachute Regiment that saw the images, says that he is convinced that the fast -working hero has a form of special troops, military or police training.
Paul Biddiss studied CCTV images of the moment the Brit conquered the knives and emphasized the five meaningful signs that he was specially trained.
Exclusively to MailOnline, Paul said: 'There is no doubt in my mind that he has received a form of training. That can be military, it could be the police, or it could be that he is involved in close protection.
'In the opening series, in six seconds, you can see that he is extremely fit and the speed with which he chases his attacker, suggests that he is participating in regular fitness training.
“That in itself does not prove that he is out of a military background, but then 12 seconds in the way he has captured the Messenmen and him on the ground, shows his background.
“And let's think that this man had just stabbed five people. But he [the hero] Is so calm, so controlled and if not surprised about his situation. It is unthinkable that he was not trained to do that.
'After 18 seconds you can see that he eliminates the attacker by carefully exerting pressure on the wrists, elbows and shoulder.
“In the 24 seconds it seems to me that he has taken his belt, something that you are taught in the army – to improvise and use what you have on your person to threaten and destroy a threat.”

Paul, who was in the Parachute Regiment for 24 years, also works in counter-protection and intelligence, and his services are even used on TV dramas: he helped on the recent Sky Blockbuster the day of the Jackal, with Eddie Redmayne in the lead role, and last week he attended Queen Camilla.
Paul added about the real drama in Amsterdam: 'From what I can see, he uses belly -lying techniques, taught in tactical control and limitation training.

“He has placed the man in an arm lock where his arm states that he cannot move it and this creates pain that can be used to control an attacker.”
Paul also emphasized that the man was' clearly in good condition 'and said:' He has a good level of fitness and that is required for those who work in the police or security sector.
'You have to keep your heart rate under control to maintain the ability to effectively perform such physical skills and to control the situation and your environment.
'Normally the skill level lowers the heart rate increases and the ability to stay focused and deteriorates in full control.

'The higher the stress level, the lower the skill level and the duller the response time – but this man reacts super fast, as you can see.

“My theory is that he could work ex-soldier in the security sector, because these techniques are taught as part of the training.”
The Ukrainian knives brought the quiet streets of the picturesque Dutch channel city last Thursday.
On Friday, Feme Halsema, the mayor of Amsterdam, thanked the British man for his actions and led him the city pin of the city – what the Badge of Hero – means courage in her official residence.
“He is a very modest British man,” she told the Amsterdam -Nieuwskanaal AT5.
“He has no desire to become famous. He is now mainly concerned with the victims; He feels responsible for them. '
She said that the tourist had shown 'Great Instinct' by overwhelming the suspicious moments after he had stabbed the fifth victim.
“This man made a decision in a fraction of a second, which is really exceptional and for which a lot of appreciation should be,” she added.

The knife-wheeler itself was injured in the leg and was admitted to the infirmary of the prison in Scheveningen. He will appear in the court in Amsterdam on Tuesday.
