The former San Diego Padres star has received a suspension of 80 games after testing for a performance improvement that is prohibited by the competition, MLB insider Mike Rodriguez reported for the first time.
Jon Heyman later reported that the forbidden medicine in question was human chorion gonadotropin (HCG) – a hormone produced by the placenta during pregnancy.
Profar recognized the suspension in an apology to Braves fans, but willingly denied the forbidden substance.
“Today is the most difficult day of my baseball career,” he wrote in a statement on Monday evening. 'I am devastated to announce that I was suspended for 80 games by Major League Baseball and the office of the Commissioner, for positive testing on a forbidden substance this season.
'This is especially painful for me because everyone who knows me and has seen me play, know that I am deeply passionate about the game. There is nothing I love more than compete with my teammates and be a favorite with fans.
