'An important was the first time I met the Steppenwolf Enemble. It was all because of the piece, Say Goodnight, Gracie, which I had directed – Broadway. The producer wanted to bring it to Chicago, but the playwright would not give him the rights unless I was the director. But I kept saying: “I don't want to direct it, I have already directed it,” he said.
“But he convinced me and I flew to auditions in a dirty mood … and it was like Alice in Wonderland.
'I fell in this rabbit hole of sparkle that I didn't know existed. I met the entire ensemble and audition, which was an unforgettable few hours.
'I had never heard of them, and suddenly I had to choose between actors such as Laurie Metcalf and Joan Allen for the same role.
'The rest of the cast included John Malkovich, Glenne Headley and Fran Guinan. I remember that I offered Jeff Perry a different role, and he said to me: “Buddy …” – We had just met and he calls me “buddy” – “Buddy, I can't do this. I have played too many large parts in recent productions. I shouldn't take this part for the well -being of the ensemble.”

“And I said,” Are you crazy? 'I was a New York actor, I had never heard of such a way!
“He said,” Oh, I want the part and I would like to work with you, but I don't have to. It will disrupt the balance of the ensemble. ” I thought, “These people are crazy.” '
And he added: “Almost everything has been an accident.”
He also shared: 'I can't think of a project that I pursued. Even Orson's shadow was written because Judith Auberjenois asked me to write it for her husband Rene, who did not want to do it then. '
And he discussed working with Orson Welles on Catch – 22, hinting that he was not nice to work with.

'When the film was released, I was quoted in all these magazines and said they really cut things about him. And, as big as a ** hole as he was, he was still a great artist, although he was really catching – 22 artistically injured.
“He led all the scenes in which he found himself – and I was with him in everyone, so I know. [Director] Mike Nichols would finish a scene, and then Orson would reduce it and get all the humor out.
“He would say to Mike:” You don't understand the comedy. 'Now the worst opponents of Mike Nichols have never said he doesn't understand comedy! [laughter] Orson would give this pompous small speeches about comedy and then divert the scene. '
