From London to Liverpool, the British Chinatowns attract millions of visitors with their thriving food scenes and lively nightlife.
But a hidden threat loles about their bustling streets – its presence hidden by a silence code that makes a risk that few are willing to take.
Chinese triade gangs can rarely get the headlines, but they work in many of the British Chinatowns – while they also carry out control much further.
One experienced detective she today described them as 'by far the most advanced and organized criminal gangs' in Britain, with operations that span the entire country.
The detective claimed that all urban police services of the UK have 'huge problems' with triade activities, in particular London, Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool.
“They have an enormous influence and use fear and violence to extort, strain and control,” he warned.
David McKelvey, who spent almost 30 years with the spa, said that the police were an urgent need to acknowledge the threat they are and cling to their activities.
So who are the triads, in which crimes are they involved and where are they active?
The first indication can be in a surprising place – a quiet street in the trendy Walthamstow district in Noord -Londen.
In recent weeks, this area has become the center of a bizarre crimewave who has seen houses splash with red paint and complained with the word 'brothel' in a series of mysterious nocturnal attacks.

After intense speculation, criminologist Oliver Chan linked the incidents to an intimidation tactics used by Triade gangs to enforce debt releases – a theory that is apparently supported by images of some attackers who spoke Mandarin.
Mr. McKelvey, a former detective head inspector who specializes in organized crime who now runs his own private research company, TM Eye, believes they are a worrying sign.
“This indicates triade activity and is a sign that the gangs are involved in open warfare,” he said MailOnline.
Coming from secret societies formed during the 18th and 19th-century China, the triads first appeared in the UK in the early 1950s after the end of the Second World War.
Rival the Italian Mafia and the Japanese Yakuza as one of the most powerful and feared the world's transnational organized crime networks, they now work over six of the world's seven continents – albeit in rival factions.
McKelvey said that triads established in the UK were now involved in a wide range of illegal activities, including cannabis production, modern slavery and human trafficking, as well as the production of the synthetic opioid fentanyl.
Another specialty is tobacco smuggling, as a result of which the former DCI imposed a disturbing link between the recent events in London and the current gang war that is going on in Australia about the trade in illegal cigarettes.
“This may be possible in the public domain such as in Australia, where we have seen Firebomb attacks on tobacco shops and murders,” he said. “These networks are very organized, very successful and work throughout the VK.”

TM Eye recently secured the successful private prosecution of four members of a triad-linked crime gang that had imported counterfeit tobacco from Hong Kong.
Although the attacks were carried out by Border Force officers at Stansted airport, neither the police nor HMRC decided to take the case – so that TM Eye was brought in instead.
Mr. McKelvey, who has investigated the triads in a private capacity for six years, said that their focus on crimes such as tobacco smuggling – which are generally considered a lower priority than violent violations – meant that they often fell under the radar of the police.
“They go for a high reward, crime with a low risk,” he said.
“We have not seen any real violence up -To date of the raids we have done, but that is because they all earn huge amounts of money, most of which go to China via social media platforms.”
McKelvey connected the tobacco network that he investigated to 14K, an outfit based in Hong Kong. They are one of the most prominent triad groups that are active in the UK in addition to Wo Shing WO – that also comes from the former British territory.
A rare public collision between the two rival groups took place in the Chinatown of Manchester in June 2010, when 30 men launched a full street struggle that left five in the hospital with serious stab wounds.
Jury members heard how the problems started in the K2 Karaoke bar when the alleged leader of Wo Shing Wo reportedly challenged a rival by screaming: “I have walked through the streets of Manchester for more than 10 years – who do you think you are?”
